Security

In modern times, security has become an important part of our every day lives. The events of 9/11 left the world gasping for breath and since then constant vigilance has become crucial for survival.

However, we may think that increased security is only extended to airports and travelling but due to advancements in technology; we are taking security into our own hands and homes. It is not unusual for people to have multiple security systems installed in their houses. It is not unusual for there to be an increasing number of CCTV cameras installed all over our towns and cities. In this modern day and age people would go to extreme lengths to make sure our lives are safe and secure and the government is a huge contributor towards our general safety and security. However, with increased numbers of technological devices and an increase in security we have to wonder, how does this affect our liberty as people?

Advanced technology helps to catch criminals and promote the well-being of law abiding citizens but it also provides a form of big brother for the government. Thanks to increased security and technology, the government can now track our every move through mobile phones, cameras and cash machines.

Keeping the so called constant vigilance in mind, does the government have an ulterior motive for increased security? At what point does increased security become a violation of law abiding citizens’ liberty? Perhaps the most important question of all; where does security end and societies of control begin?
